Tom has served as the hospital's chief executive officer since 1998. He came to Charlottesville from Tyler, Texas, where he served in the same role for HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Tyler. He received a bachelor's degree in accounting from Virginia Tech and a master of business administration from the University of Texas at Tyler. He has served on the Northwest Virginia Health Planning Agency Local Review Board, the Certificate of Public Need Review Board Nominating Committee as well as numerous professional and educational advisory boards. His vision for the hospital and outpatient services is clinical excellence in an environment promoting professional growth and outcomes research.
Dr. Alfano has been our Medical Director since the hospital opened in 1998. He received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA and completed his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) at Nassau County Medical Center in New York. He is board-certified in PM&R and is an associate professor in the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation at UVA. He is also the director of spinal cord rehabilitation and is the chief of the inpatient division in the PM&R department. His clinical interests are in the areas of inpatient, geriatric and orthopedic rehabilitation, spinal cord injury rehab, spasticity management, and quality management.
Paul T. Diamond, MD, Director of Neurorehabilitation at the University of Virginia, is an Associate Professor with tenure in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Diamond is dual-boarded in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Internal Medicine. He has been selected for inclusion in both Castle Connolly's America's Top Doctors and the Best Doctors in America database. He received his undergraduate degree from Harvard College and medical degree from the University of Virginia. He completed his residency training in both Internal Medicine and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. Dr. Diamond serves as primary attending on the UVA-HealthSouth Neurorehabilitation Service and is Director of Research for the UVA Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He has authored over thirty publications and abstracts and has lectured extensively on neurorehabilitation and functional outcomes.
Maribeth has served as the hospital's director of therapy operations since the hospital opened in 1998. Maribeth received a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Michigan State University and a master's degree in occupational therapy from Western Michigan University. She is an active member of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), the Virginia Occupational Therapy Association (VOTA); and the Blue Ridge District of Virginia Occupational Therapy Association (BROTA).
Lori began in rehabilitation as a student nurse in 1988. After working in acute care, she returned to rehabilitation when UVA-HealthSouth opened in 1998. She began as a floor nurse, case manager, and then served as a PPS coordinator. She joined the Senior Team in 2002 as the Director of Quality. In 2008, she began in the role of Chief Nursing Officer. Lori is certified as a Registered Rehabilitation Nurse and works to encourage rehabilitation certification for all of the RN staff at UVA-HealthSouth. She is a Board Member for the Virginia Association of Rehabilitation Nurses and serves on the Capital Hill Gang for the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses.
David serves as the hospital's Controller. A seasoned accountant holding a certification as a Management Accountant and 25-year healthcare veteran, David received a bachelor's degree in Accounting and Finance from Virginia Tech. He is an active member of the Institute of Management Accountants (Richmond Chapter) where he held a position of Webmaster for four years.
Deanne has more than 25 years of clinical, administrative leadership and program development experience. Her diverse clinical background includes practice and management in the acute, ICU, correctional and rehabilitative settings. Deanne originally joined UVA-HealthSouth in 2003 and has worked as a Nurse Supervisor, Spinal Cord/Orthopaedic Unit Manager and Admission Liaison before accepting her current role as Director of Marketing Operations in 2007. As Director of Marketing Operations and a passionate patient advocate, Deanne leads a team of admission liaisons as well as developing community, educational and advertising campaigns to increase the public’s knowledge of the benefits of acute rehab. A graduate of the University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware, Deanne is also a Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse.
Tonya has more than ten years of human resource management experience that spans from manufacturing to health care. She earned a bachelor's degree in business administration with a minor in human resource management and a master's degree in business administration with a concentration in human resource management, and a master's degree in health services administration from Strayer University of Manassas.
Michael serves as the hospital's director of Quality Improvement/Risk Management. He is an Occupational Therapist and was the Senior OT on the Spinal Cord/Orthopedic floor at UVA-HealthSouth from the time it opened in 1998 until he moved to the Quality role in 2008. Michael received his bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Virginia and his master's degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
